The building occupies the spot where formerly stood a women´s Prision, until its clousure and demolition in the 1970´s. The square itself is still known as _Prision Square_ ( Plaza de la Cárcel ). In 1983, this old prision was pulled down to build _Los Cantaros Hotel_. Los Cantaros means earthenware and the Hotel takes its name from earthenware Jugs dating back to XVII century, found in the subsoil of the old prision; today, these jugs are displayed in the _Town Museum_ and some are on display in the hotel reception.
